EU-US Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial Meeting [fr]

On 23 June in Paris, the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union will host the traditional ministerial meeting between the European Union and the United States on issues concerning justice and home affairs.

Cooperation to face shared challenges

After the EU-US Justice and Home Affairs Senior Officials Meeting on 4 and 5 April 2022 in Paris, the French Presidency will host a ministerial-level meeting on these issues on 23 June 2022. It will follow on from the ministerial meeting hosted by the American authorities in Washington on 16 December 2021, under the Slovenian presidency.

In a context now marked by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and persistence of shared issues in the area of justice and home affairs, the meeting will be attended by the United States Attorney General, Merrick B. Garland; the United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro N. Mayorkas; Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritas Schinas; the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders; and the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson.

The discussions will contribute both to maintaining high-level dialogue between the European Union and the United States and to considering new avenues for concrete cooperation in the fields of justice and internal security.

A key moment of dialogue between the European Union and the United States

The meeting, co-organised by the French Ministry of Justice and Ministry of the Interior, will be held at the Ministry of Justice in Paris at Place Vendôme. The French Ministers of Justice and the Interior will chair the meeting.

The European institutions will be represented by the European Commission as well as by the EU Counter Terrorism Coordinator, Ilkka Salmi, and representatives of Europol and Eurojust. The Czech Ministers of Justice and of the Interior will represent the next presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Discussions will focus on the ramifications of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, in particular from the perspective of gathering evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity, implementing sanctions and seizing assets, supporting refugees and the impact of the war on security issues. . They will also address the fight against terrorism, radicalisation and hate crimes, cybercrime and environmental crime. Discussions will furthermore cover the issue of mobility between the European Union and the United States and the priorities of the upcoming Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
